In October, we choose a Mayor and six councillors
Those seven people shape how you get around, whether your kids or your parents can afford to stay here, and what we do locally about global warming.
Last time, 22.6% of voters turned out in each of the two North Vancouvers, and 35.2% in West Vancouver. Part of the reason is simple: it’s hard to know what any of these names stand for. We’ve selected candidates based on three values:
Freedom. A city works because people live close to one another — yet the way across ours keeps us stuck in traffic. Freedom means having options: frequent transit in lanes that bypass the queue, connected routes for people on bikes, a corner store you can walk to. When driving is the only promoted choice, nobody is free — not the teenager, not the senior, not the person who can’t afford a car.
Belonging. Every neighbourhood should have room for the people who make the North Shore a community: teachers, nurses, retail staff, young families, seniors downsizing, people who are not working, people with disabilities. That means affordable and social housing, as well as gentle density and missing-middle housing in every neighbourhood, not just on a few streets.
Responsibility. Climate is the defining problem of our time, and a community as fortunate as ours has no excuse for waiting on someone else. Doing your bit individually is not enough — the decisions that count are collective, and they are made at council. Moving people with less fossil fuel and building less sprawl are climate policy.
If those are your values too, these are the people we think will act on them.
Before you mark your ballot
We recommend that you only vote for those candidates you actually want to see elected — even where that means using fewer votes than you are entitled to.
You can mark up to six names for council, but you are never obliged to mark that many. Every extra name you mark is a vote that can help lift another candidate above the ones you most want to win. If there are three candidates you believe in, marking only those three gives them more weight relative to everyone else than marking six would.
Marking fewer names will not spoil your ballot, and the votes you do cast count exactly the same.
