Dear Mayor and Council,
Re: Support for Transportation and Mobility Projects in the 2026-2030 Capital Plan
Better North Shore is a grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to improving livability, sustainability, and mobility across the North Shore. We work to advance progressive transportation policies, active transportation infrastructure, and community-focused planning that benefits all residents.
We are writing to express our strong support for the inclusion of several key transportation and mobility projects in the proposed 2026-2030 Capital Plan, and to encourage Council to approve and prioritize these important initiatives.
Projects We Strongly Support:
Multi-modal Network Plan Update (Ref 3-12) - This foundational work will ensure our transportation planning takes a comprehensive, systems-based approach that integrates all modes of travel. This is essential groundwork for future initiatives.
Street Design Guidelines (Ref 3-13) - Establishing clear, consistent standards for safe and inclusive street design will improve planning efficiency and ensure our streets serve all users.
Rapid Transit Studies (Ref 3-14) - Supporting TransLink's rapid transit planning with local analysis is crucial to ensuring North Vancouver maximizes the benefits of future transit investments and maintains a strong voice in regional transportation planning.
Greening Streets (Ref 3-15) - Transforming our hottest blocks to address climate impacts while maintaining street functionality demonstrates innovative, climate-responsive urban design.
Mobility Network Implementation (Ref 3-16) - Delivering on the Priority Mobility Network Strategy with infrastructure for the Upper Levels Greenway, Mid-town Corridor, and Chesterfield Corridor will create safe, accessible routes for people of all ages and abilities using active transportation.
New Sidewalks to Complete the Pedestrian Network (Ref 3-17) - Completing our sidewalk network is fundamental to making walking a safe, viable option for all trips.
Transit Improvement Program (Ref. 3-18) - Bus priority measures, accessibility upgrades, and new shelters will enhance transit reliability, comfort, and accessibility for all.
Public Realm Improvements (Ref 3-19) - Streetscape enhancements create welcoming public spaces that encourage walking and community connection.
Sidewalks - Infill and Reconstruction (Ref 3-20) - Maintaining our existing infrastructure and eliminating tripping hazards is essential for safety and accessibility.
Foot of Lonsdale Streetscape Upgrade (Ref 3-21) - Refreshing this key waterfront area will enhance one of our community's most important public gathering spaces.
These projects collectively represent a significant investment in making North Vancouver more livable, sustainable, and accessible. They align with climate action goals, support local businesses, improve safety, and enhance quality of life for residents across our community.
We thank Council for including these initiatives in the Capital Plan and strongly encourage you to approve the budget and move forward with implementation. These projects will deliver lasting benefits for current and future generations of North Vancouver residents.
Sincerely,
